On the afternoon of March 4, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Dieu - Vice Chairman of the Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee, chaired a meeting with the delegation from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) led by Ms. Judith Clara Varga – Toth, Director of the Vietnam Climate Resilient Urban Development Project (VNCRM).
The two sides discussed coordinating the implementation of the VNCRM Project in Dong Thap province
Speaking at the meeting, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Dieu expressed his delight at welcoming the expert delegation from Canada. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Dieu stated that Dong Thap province is one of the localities directly affected by climate change, especially the situation of subsidence, riverbank erosion, and erratic changes in water flow. Therefore, the implementation of the VNCRM Project is of particular importance for the sustainable development of the locality.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Dieu expressed his belief that, through the VNCRM Project and Canadian partners, Dong Thap province will gradually improve its urban development orientation adapted to climate change, enhance resilience, and ensure harmonious development between economy, society, and environment.
Ms. Judith Clara Varga - Toth, VNCRM Project Director, stated that the project is funded by the Canadian Government through Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and FCM, implemented from 2026 - 2030. The project is carried out in Ha Noi and piloted in the provinces of Quang Ninh, Dong Thap, Lam Dong, and Da Nang city, with the goal of supporting Vietnamese cities in enhancing their resilience to negative environmental impacts.
In Dong Thap, the project will focus on sharing management experience, technical support, and building pilot models in key areas. The project will not only stop at infrastructure consulting but also aim to improve governance capacity for sustainable urban planning, promote the role of women and vulnerable groups in environmental protection; at the same time, apply green solutions and advanced Canadian technologies in waste treatment and water resource protection.
Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Dieu committed that the province would create all favorable conditions regarding procedures and counterpart resources to ensure the project is implemented on schedule
In discussions with the delegation, leaders from the Department of Construction, Department of Agriculture and Environment, the Provincial Women's Union, and the People's Committees of My Tho and Cao Lanh wards presented specific local conditions and expressed their desire for the project to help solve urban drainage problems and improve livelihoods for residents adapting to new conditions.
